Liberal Group files paper work to run for Congress

Following the Citizens United decision, Murray Hill Inc has decided it will run for a seat in Congress.

The campaign ad that Murray Hill has released enforces it’s right to run as the Supreme Court has designated such corporations as people. It also makes light of the decision, saying now they may directly represent themselves, rather than paying lobbyists and relying on indirectly affecting the process.

Now, in full disclosure, their website claims Murray Hill is a progressive organization founded in 2005, so it’s more left wing mocking of the law. However, it does pose an interesting question. Why can’t they run for office and have a designated delegate? After all, they are considered legal persons now, with the reasoning coming from the 14th amendment. It only makes sense they can run for office too, or act as advisors, etc.

Supreme Court overturns campaign spending limits

The Supreme Court today overturned a part of the McCain-Feingold law that limited spending by unions and corporations on ad spending in a 5-4 decision.

Now, I’m all for free speech, but when it comes to the integrity of our elections I have no issues with limits being put on spending by unions and corporations. They already have the ability to do such ad buys through their PACs so long as funds are not donated from a treasury, but instead voluntary contributions from members and employees.

Neither unions nor corporations should use treasury funds to directly support or oppose a candidate through ads. There’s already enough pressure when a large entity decides to endorse a candidate, that shouldn’t be pushed further with ads bearing the company name being aired consistently. In addition, the funds that can be spent are now unlimited, giving large corporations and large unions the ability to make large 11th hour ad buys that could destroy a candidacy with misleading information- of which there is already enough trouble coming from both parties and PACs.

Christian Football Player to Appear in Pro life Commercial During Superbowl

Mr. Tim Tebow, football player from University of Florida, poses behind The Heissman Memorial Trophy

Okay, perhaps I HAVE been living under a rock, but I have never heard of Tim Tebow until I read this piece which a friend of mine linked on twitter.

Apparently, he will be doing a pro life commercial for Focus on the Family during the Superbowl. This one commercial will be getting a lot of exposure just from being aired during the Superbowl, but it is also creating some controversy now.

The article seems to me to like Tebow, but not the idea of him doing this commercial. It paints Focus on the Family as some sort of hate group who will taint Mr. Tebow with its image. I don’t understand the article’s presumption that by endorsing prolife sentiments for Focus on the Family, that automatically endorses everything else they believe. Afterall, if a player endorses Miller Genuine Draft, to we assume he also likes Miller High Life and Miller Lite?

My thoughts on MA

So, first off congratulations to Scott Brown. His campaign staff did an excellent job through out this process of ensuring their candidate had the best shot at getting elected. The staff did an incredibly goog job of spinning things Brown’s way, and the campaign they ran was simply incredible.

That said, I was not shocked in the least by a Brown victory in Massachusetts tonight. While Democrats may outnumber Republicans 3-1, Independents outnumber both by a wide margin, which has led the way to Republicans holding statewide office in the past. While the seat may have been Kennedy’s, Massachusetts voters don’t see the seat that way once someone is gone. It becomes an empty seat to fill, regardless of feelings for the past lawmaker. However, I will be interested to see the 2012 election campaign, as it will likely be another competitive race. I’m not so sure this seat will become another “senator for life seat” for awhile.

The Original Apparitions in Zeitun

Hi! I’m sorry it took me so long to submit this, but my vacation kept me busier than I thought it would (I thought I would be relaxing) Anyways, I know it might be too late to post this, but I just wanted you to read it ;)

Since I was very very little, my dad would tell me how he witnessed the apparitions in Zeitun when he was thirteen. I used to wish for a time machine just so that I could go and see what it was like. He always recounts it so calmly, like he was dictating a recipe, not some life changing, supernatural experience. I was (and am) sure that it had to be more exciting and moving. I wanted to see it for myself.

Students should consider coed housing

**This article was submitted under our Community News section by a registered user.  The comments in this article may not reflect the opinion or feelings of 2SecondsFaster.com, its management, or its staff.

___________________________________________________

An editorial appeared in today’s Boston Globe I found fairly fascinating. It mentions an upward trend in the number of colleges allowing co-ed housing.

The argument behind allowing such arrangements seems to surround the GLBT community. The offer is opt-in and appears to be taken advantage of largely by students questioning their gender identity, and those who may feel uncomfortable rooming with someone of the same gender if their room mate finds out they are attracted to the same sex.

Now, the article mentions a study that shows that couples trying to take advantage of this option is exceedingly rare. I don’t know if anyone here feels the same, but to me it makes sense. Few couples in college want to live together, at least all that quickly, or in such a confined space where neither can really get any privacy. Throw in that most room mates tend to be willing to give each other “alone time” with their boyfriend or girlfriend, and it doesn’t seem all that outlandish.

Community News (Part II)

image Back in May we added “Community News” to the site. I really liked the idea (still do), but it lacked some “oomph” as I see it. The limitation was that you could not add much except a link, add a short description, but we couldn’t discuss it as a community. I use a plug-in on another site which can address this short fall, it is just difficult to get running right. So now, I am opening up a new version of Community News that allows you to submit a post and if approved appears in-line with all the other posts. Basically, you get to join in and put your thoughts up with ours and as a community we can discuss it in a mostly civil manner.

There are rules and we reserve the right to allow or disallow anything based on content. You must be a registered user of the site to put up a submission. So come one, come all and let us know of any news story or thought that you want to have the community talk about or just know about. Think of it as a way to push us off topic or have your own personal Saturday Mixer.
