Brave New Book Club ~ ~ ~ March 15th, 2010

CHAPTER TWO:

“Moral Education, which ought never, in any circumstances, to be rational” page 26

I am struck by two things in this chapter.  First, the concept of beauty.  Even the author seems to understand that love of beauty is innate.  So much so that he has to work for years, using extremely harsh methods, to eradicate it.

Again we have the stark contrast between the “institute” and color. Rebecca-and-the-bowl-or-roses-714481

…their hair aseptically hidden under white caps”

“…opened invitingly each at some gaily coloured image of beast or fish or foul”

Prayers for Parker

parker

shamrock Hey All…Kim has been an extremely close friend of mine for over 30 years.  She knew me when I wasn’t Catholic and was there for all those things I told you I did in my other life.  (And if she talks out of school, I’ll have to find her and kill her).

Her son and one of my kids were born around the same time.  Mine was healthy as a horse, and Kim’s was born with many problems, not the least of which is Cerebral Palsy.  His name is Parker and he is now 13.  He’s an awfully friendly little guy…if he tells me he loves me one more time, I’m afraid I’m going to have to marry him.

Any how, he is suffering from severe scoliosis and is undergoing corrective surgery (it’s a TEN HOUR OPERATION!  YIKES) on Wednesday, March 17th.  (St. Patrick be with us).  I’ll be spending the day with her.  So I’m asking for prayers, prayers and more prayers for one of our own.  You can keep up to date by going here.

Thanks, and keep those prayers and well wishes coming…

Sunday Readings ~ ~ ~ March 14th, 2010

passover

Reading I

Jos 5:9a, 10-12

The LORD said to Joshua,

“Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.”

While the Israelites were encamped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho,

they celebrated the Passover

on the evening of the fourteenth of the month.

On the day after the Passover,

they ate of the produce of the land

in the form of unleavened cakes and parched grain.

On that same day after the Passover,

on which they ate of the produce of the land, the manna ceased.

No longer was there manna for the Israelites,

who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan.

Reading II

2 Cor 5:17-21

Brothers and sisters:

Whoever is in Christ is a new creation:

the old things have passed away;

behold, new things have come.

And all this is from God,

who has reconciled us to himself through Christ

and given us the ministry of reconciliation,

namely, God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ,

Rex Roland is the Only Loser Here

Rex Roland, a 6th grade teacher in a North Carolina School, claims it was just a joke, a way to get close to the kids.  But one mom isn’t laughing.  And I’m not either.

From NECN:

(NECN/WLOS) – A middle school teacher’s controversial style of educating has him in hot water with one parent.

Rex Roland teaches sixth grade at Enka Middle School in Candler, North Carolina.  Parent Patty Clement said Roland wrote "loser" in red ink after correcting her daughter’s paper.

"I went to the principal in November and complained," Clement said.  "She said she would put a stop to it."

A few weeks ago, another of 11-year-old Heather Clement’s graded assignment made its way home and at the top of the page was a step beyond the original — "minus 20% for being a loser."  The word "loser" underlined twice and capitalized.

Mrs. Clement called the assistant superintendent, then met with the principal and Mr. Roland.  She said Roland apologized and said it was his way of joking with students.  To Mrs. Clement, the practice is unacceptable.

"Suspend him," she said.  "Make him think about what he has done — the severity of this."

All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go

Okay, you all know how I feel about Gay Marriage, and homosexual activity across the board.  But you also know, I hope, that I am fair, and reasonable, and truly believe in hate the sin,  love the sinner.

So I’m torn on this one.  On the one hand, if it’s school policy, it’s school policy, onlesbian prom the other hand, this isn’t a Private School and I don’t see how this CAN be school policy.

Prom is coming up…or it was…and one of the students, a lesbian, wants to bring her “date”, another female, and wear a tuxedo.  Instead of either banning her and her date, changing the policy, or insisting that she bring a male “friend”, they have canceled the entire prom.  This doesn’t seem fair, either to the student or the school.  Regardless of whether or not someone is a lesbian, prom dates are not always easy to come by (can’t imagine what it’s like in South Korea… ;) to Val and Alexandra), so I don’t understand the policy of only bringing dates of the opposite sex.   I mean, couldn’t two girls or two guys that didn’t have “dates” come as friends?  Is prom really all about pairing couples?  Or is it a last bash to celebrate four years together and a way to say goodbye to their old life and hello to their new?  Even if it was originally intended to be “date night” (King/Queen), should it remain so?  How many tears have been spilt by girls who weren’t asked?

Stupid Is As Stupid Does…Diesel Clothing Does Award Winning Stupid

If being stupid is the objective, then they score for the win.

Yesterday, I went to Holy Name Cathedral for a “Evening With Mary”.  We had Mass, the Rosary, and one of the visionaries from Medjugorje (Ivan Dragicevic) actually had his daily apparition right there on the altar!  It was, as you can imagine, way amazing.

On the way back to the car, we passed a store.   Apparently, though you sure couldn’t tell from the window display, it was a clothing store.  There were no “clothes” to be seen, but the window was filled with signs, sporting various slogans on how to be cool.

The name of the store was “Diesel”.  I have never heard of this store, but the people I was with were all too familiar with it.  It is owned by a man named Renzo Rosso.  His “headquarters” is in Molvena in Northern Italy.

So what was on the signs in the windows?

diesel

I thought these were outrageous enough, but when I got home I began to do a little research.

BRAVE NEW WORLD … by: ALDOUS HUXLEY

CHAPTER ONE:

I realize that most of you either don’t have the book, or if you have it, haven’t readbrave-new-world the first chapter.  But I pretty much did the other book club alone too, so I’ll do the same here.  Just jump in, if or when, you want to.

Chapter One:

My husband and I are avid readers.  I average a book a week, often reading two.  He does the same.  We are also enthusiastic movie goers…again, I try to see a movie a week.  (Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on the movie, many of those are children’s movies).

My favorite Genre is Supernatural or Psychological thrillers.  I adore Dean Koontz, am a fan of Stephen King (tho less and less), Iris Johansen, James Patterson….you get the picture.  I saw Paranormal Activity, Zombieland, Shutter Island, all the Doomsday flicks…

I HATE slasher movies however, and will NOT see a movie that has purely gratuitous violence.

2010, Sunday Readings for March 7th

moses_striking_water_rock_xcg1_hi

Reading I
Ex 17:3-7

In those days, in their thirst for water,
the people grumbled against Moses,
saying, “Why did you ever make us leave Egypt?
Was it just to have us die here of thirst
with our children and our livestock?”
So Moses cried out to the LORD,
“What shall I do with this people?
a little more and they will stone me!”
The LORD answered Moses,
“Go over there in front of the people,
along with some of the elders of Israel,
holding in your hand, as you go,
the staff with which you struck the river.
I will be standing there in front of you on the rock in Horeb.
Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it
for the people to drink.”
This Moses did, in the presence of the elders of Israel.
The place was called Massah and Meribah,
because the Israelites quarreled there
and tested the LORD, saying,
“Is the LORD in our midst or not?”

Reading II
Rom 5:1-2, 5-8
Brothers and sisters:
Since we have been justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
through whom we have gained access by faith
to this grace in which we stand,
and we boast in hope of the glory of God.

John McDonell

Hey all.  Some of  you may have noticed that John McDonell has been M.I.A for aletter while now.  Well, he sent me a letter (an actual letter written on paper..lol..you remember those!) and it seems that his computer privileges have been revoked!

Here’s what the letter says:

Hi MK,

I’m not dead yet  – but I am working on it!”  my newest slogan – pretty apt, eh?

This fellow and I are part of the geek-crew here.  We two had a falling out, and because he controlled my online hours, he decided to abruptly pull-the-plug.

So instead of whining about it I decided to make this part of my prolife sacrifice.  Any info will be by snail-mail letter now.

Just wanted you to know that I’m OK…for now.

Love ya,

Johnny

So I was thinking that maybe we could all write something to him, I’ll print it and then send it on to him through the mail.

Just write something in the comments.  What do you think?  You guys up for it?  He’s pretty much trapped in his house as well as his body, and I think he’d really love to know that he hasn’t been forgotten!
