Planned Parenthood can’t seem to get it straight

By Valerie Jane | July 14, 2007

I have a simple question for Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri.  How much money is the new law going to cost you?  You know, the law requiring you to follow basic regulations that all other surgical centers follow.  Yea, that one.  How much will is cost you?  I’m asking www.ppkm.orgbecause you and/or the media just can’t seem to get the numbers right.

From a June 17 article from The Columbian Missourian:

Rather than quitting its Missouri abortion business, Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri now is studying how it could comply with the new requirements. A preliminary review shows it would cost substantially more than $1 million to make the necessary changes at each of its abortion clinics, Chief Executive Officer Peter Brownlie told The Associated Press.

In contrast to his May 18 assertion that the legislation “will shut down abortion services,” Brownlie now says “our intent is to continue offering that service, if we can.”

From a July 13 article from The Columbian Missourian:

New estimates put the project’s price tag at $1.5 million to $2 million, said Michelle Trupiano, public affairs manager for Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri.

Planned Parenthood is considering the necessary renovations to its Columbia branch to become classified as an ambulatory surgical center, as well as legal action, Trupiano said.

Planned Parenthood is expected to make a decision by Aug. 28.

From July 14 article from People’s Weekly World:

Planned Parenthood reproductive health clinics to become “ambulatory surgical centers,” at an estimated $1 million cost…. Changing the designation of reproductive health clinics forces Planned Parenthood to expand hallways leading to operating and recovery rooms.

From July 13 article from KOMU Channel 8:

Planned Parenthood says its clinic is safe and that the new regulations force the clinic to stop offering abortion services because it doesn’t have the $2 million needed for renovations.

“To put these burdensome regulations that have nothing to do with improving women’s health and safety…It’s all about shutting down access to abortion care here in Missouri,” said (Michelle) Trupiano.

Planned Parenthood in Columbia has no formal fundraising plans to collect the $2 million for renovations. It will stop offering abortions when the law goes into effect August 28th.

If you have a contractor giving you an estimate of somewhere starting at 1 million and ending around 2 million, you need to get a new contractor.

Oh - But the hardships you must be facing!  First you are going to close the abortion side of the business, then you are going to figure out how you can raise the money to meet the states licensure standards, then you will stop offering abortions.  AND with all the support Planned Parenthood has, you can’t seem to figure out how to get a fundraiser going?  Not to mention the fact that Planned Parenthood had an “excess of revenue” of 55.8 million.  Why don’t you have the money again?www.ppaction.org

The violins are out in abundance in Missouri.  Poor, poor Planned Parenthood.  The politicians care more about the health of women than you do.  From the KOMU article:

“It’s helping the women of Missouri because we have made the whole process safer,” said Rep. Therese Sander of Moberly. “Why should we give abortion clinics a pass on the safety regulations that apply to every other area of medical service? It doesn’t make sense.”

“We’ve done nothing to outlaw abortion in the state of Missouri. What we’ve done is taken steps to make it safe for the women that are coming for that procedure,” said Sander.

If I go to a clinic to have a simple lipoma removed the facility must meet the requirements of an Ambulatory Surgical Center.  But Planned Parenthood wants you to have your baby removed without being required to meet state standards.  How is this beneficial for women again?
