YMCA, Planned Parenthood and Bias Reporting
By Valerie Jane | June 10, 2007
“Mayor: No more YMCA student trips to planned parenthood” - Portsmouth Herald News
“Kids taken on controversial fieldtrip” - Boston Channel.com
“Students run into abortion protesters” - Union Leader.com
What do these article titles have in common? What are the differences? All three articles are the same story. One articles heading puts abortion protesters in the title when that isn’t what the story was about. Bias reporting? You tell me.
From Union Leader.com
Middle school students in a YMCA program were confronted by abortion protesters outside Planned Parenthood on Pennacook Street Wednesday as they visited social service agencies throughout the city.
“The intent of the day was to provide information to kids who are getting ready for the summer and won’t have the support of school or at home,” said (YMCA’s community outreach director Joyce) Palmer. “The intent was not to take kids to an abortion clinic. That word was never said.”
Let’s stop here. Doesn’t Planned Parenthood do more than just abortions? That is what they have been screaming for several decades now. What else do they do? Sex Education, contraception’s and STD testing comes to mind. And why were these middle school students at a Planned Parenthood?
“The Support, Tutoring, Adventure for Youth Program has for 20 years offered programs at the city’s four middle schools to students believed to be at risk of dropping out and turning to substance abuse, violence and other at-risk behavior.”
Middle school students? Planned Parenthood was on the route for middle school students to visit? This organization (A Christian one at that) wants to educate children so they do not engage in “at-risk behavior”. Isn’t promiscuous sex at-risk behavior? Doesn’t Planned Parenthood not only support but encourage promiscuous sex? Or is it they only encourage and protect pedophiles? I always forget.
Anne Johnson, the Planned Parenthood educator who spoke to the children Wednesday, said abortion was never discussed. She said she spoke for about three minutes about “the array of services that we offer, 96 percent of which are prevention.”
Prevention of what? Sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy. Okay - so we have a story about 7th and 8th grade students taking a trip to Planned Parenthood. The article discusses how people were upset about this and that the program will not visit Planned Parenthood again. Wait - what about those protesters that were mentioned in the 1st paragraph? About 1/2 way through the article we get this:
“We’re pretty proud to have been selected,” said (Planned Parenthood educator Anne) Johnson. “It’s a shame that people took this as an opportunity to harass kids.”
Then three-fourths of the way through the article:
Palmer said the confrontation wasn’t anticipated ahead of time. “We just never thought about protesters,” said Palmer. “It’s not part of our everyday reality.
But Johnson said she called the YMCA before the children arrived and told them a half dozen protesters were outside.
“They were pretty invasive,” said Palmer. “There was lots of yelling. One woman actually drove her van right next to (students), stopped her van, jumped out and told the staff person, ‘I must talk to you.’ She did that three times, then followed them for half a block.”
She said the protesters tried to force literature on the school children.
How many protesters were there? 6. How many children? 41. Not to mention the adults that would have been with the children. Why couldn’t they prevent this again? And what
were they doing that a person in a van could be ‘invasive’ three times? Doesn’t Planned Parenthood have a building the kids could have gone in to? Remember, the YMCA was called ahead of time and told about the protesters.
Wait, what was this story about again? It was about how middle school students in a YMCA program visited an organization who deals primarily with sex related issues. Was it about 6 protesters who tried to hand out literature? Nope.

Doesn’t Planned Parenthood not only support but encourage promiscuous sex? Or is it they only encourage and protect pedophiles?
No actually Planned Parenthood does neither of these, but thank you for asking! Its always nice to see someone who wants to learn about something before they throw around baseless accusations.

Beth -
They don’t encourage and protect pedophiles? Really? Then why so many lawsuits? Why did they freak out when Lila Rose posted proof on UTube that they do? Why did they quickly threaten lawsuit? Instead of being shocked and fixing the problem, they were more concerned with silencing Lila and that it was Lila who violated the law not them. And why is it that when a doctor is suspected of writing illegal prescriptions there is no problem with allowing investigators to review patient records; but when Planned Parenthood is accused of protecting pedophiles and rapists everyone claims privacy rights? How is it violating privacy when the patients name and all identification removed? Also, Considering the majority of their money comes from people being promiscuous why would they not support it?
I did not throw out any baseless accusations. I can back my statements with facts. Just talk to the Planned Parenthoods in Indiana, Kansas and Ohio. i’m sure they can inform you of your error.
