So here it is – when you decide the topic(s) we will be discussing. It can cover any subject: Religion, politics, society, wild beasts, or Rae’s 100 word story idea!
Here are the rules:
- Most topics are fair game as long as it has some decency.
- If a topic just becomes a series of personal attacks, the comments will be closed.
- This is for discussions and not wars.
- All Lemmings must behave!
Here are the answers to the Trivia questions – with the names of the people who got the right answer:
1) What tough World War II general was an Olympic pent athlete in 1912?
- George S. Patton (Kristi & Stu)
2) What pilot made headlines when he landed at Le Bourget field May 21, 1927?
- Charles Lindbergh (Helen, DeeL, Stu)
3) What Nevada’ city’s reputation as a “divorce capital” began in the 1930’s? (Extra points if you know why)
- Reno, NV; Beginning in the 1930’s your were required to only stay in the state for 6 weeks to establish “residency” which is necessary to file for divorce. (Helen, Kristi, DeeL, Stu – no bonus points)
4) What major change in American paychecks began in July 1943?
- Withholding of federal income tax (Stu; I’m not sure what DeeL meant by ‘withholding’) To note: initially I thought Helen’s answer of FICA was correct because I thought it stood for Federal InCome Act – however it stands for Federal Insurance Contributions Act which started in the 1930’s. Hey! I learned something from my own trivia post! Do I get kudo points for that?
5) Author L. Ron Hubbard organized what religion in the 1950’s?
- Scientology (Helen, Kristi, DeeL, Stu – Yes, it is actually a legit, registered, tax exempt religion and it has been established in multiple countries. Anyone else remember all the commercials for Hubbard’s book “Dianetics” in the 1980’s and 1990’s?)
Bonus:
In 1939 Bob Kane introduced what crime fighter in Detective Comics No 27?
- Batman (Helen, 1/2 point to Stu)
Winners are Stu and running a very close second is Helen!
Regarding the poll last week – Spiderman won by 9 votes with Batman in 2nd with 5 votes. I do have to say that with all the women on this blog I was a bit surprised that the 2 women superhero listed had only 2 votes for Wonder Woman and 1 vote for Storm. (How many of us from the “older generation” can’t say Wonder Woman with hearing the theme song from the 1970’s TV Show? Wonder-womaaaaaaan! que in bad disco beat and that noise made when she spun around)
Perhaps we need to create our own female superhero and Rae can draw her for us!

This is from Alexandra (not DeeL as previously posted – I’m a dweeb! Sorry guys
……did anyone see the first episode of the MTV show 16 And Pregnant?
Mr. Alexandra and I watched it yesterday and it was interesting. SPOILERS but it’s a reality-ish show so I don’t know if anyone cares.
The girl was very intelligent and composed. She really seemed to be one of those people who tackles everything head-on; in the beginning she described herself as an overachiever and you’re like, “Yeah, okay, everyone says that,” but it really seemed to be true. When she found out she was pregnant she switched to an accelerated high school and graduated early, moved into an apartment with the father and with some wedding plans on the horizon, and started taking classes at a local college shortly after the baby was born — all while still working at least part-time.
The father, on the other hand, was really obnoxious. He was very obviously not ready to take on the responsibility of full-time work, his own home, and a baby. There was one point where the girl told him that she was starting to resent him because he never did anything to help out unless she begged him to; he was always going out with friends and stuff. She said something like, “To me these responsibilities are a gift but to you they’re just like a burden or something.” He said, “I’m not ready for this,” and she said, “I wasn’t either, but I grew up because I had to.”
I did wish that her parents were more supportive of her not staying with him, because I personally think that there are worse things than being a single mother, and I think that being married to a guy who makes your life harder than the baby does is one of them. The girl had so much drive and so much enthusiasm and so much potential and you could just see her life being good in the future, but it was hard to picture it being good with him in it. At one point she asked her mom about moving back home for a little while and her mom said, “I don’t think that’s going to solve anything.” If I were her mom I’d be like, “OMG totally, come home now.” I’d be interested to know if anyone supported the mom on that.
Anyway the teenagers weren’t bratty or My Super Sweet 16-y; even the obnoxious guy was obviously struggling with some tough emotions. This episode, at least, I think did a good job of cautioning against teen pregnancy without necessarily promoting abortion. The girl was always very clear that she loved her son and that she loved everything she had to do for him, etc; but it definitely did not look like a glamorization of teen pregnancy, because her life changed in some really hard ways.
Previews make it seem like other episodes will show different aspects of teen pregnancy, ie adoption, maybe a harder time adjusting to life changes than this one incredibly mature girl, etc.
I didn’t watch the show, but already feel sorry for her.
I need ideas on how to keep birds from flying into my windows. This week alone 2 birds flew into the windows breaking their necks. They were pretty yellow and black birds.
Rosie –
Do you have a bird feeder in your yard? I found that once I put a bird feeder out they stopped doing that to our front window.
Dan,
Since I know you are using a mobile web browser (iPhone?) could you let me know how the website looks? Just give me a bit of feedback, I changed the mobile side….
If there are other users using a mobile phone or PDA to access I would like your feedback also.
Stu
Again, more proof that I have an abundant amount of useless knowledge in my head…. I am also good at trivia pursuit and Jeopardy.
Stu, I access the site occasionally from my phone (Safari browser, on iPhone) but it’s totally weird and different. It comes up as almost like an RSS feed, with no homepage, just a list of articles in descending chronological order. I have to click on each article title to read any of it, and I can only read the articles themselves, no comments.
I don’t know if that’s my own fault or what. I’m pretty stupid with phone stuff; I never even wanted an iPhone or even really a camera-phone, though I have to admit that the iPhone at least has changed my life in many positive ways. But anyway the point is it could be something I’m doing wrong. No other site is like that for me, though; and I have tried re-starting the phone, typing in the URL anew, etc. It’s not a big deal but as long as you’re asking, there it is.

Unless DeeL has been hanging out with my pardner, I think that first comment was from me! lol
I unexpectedly got the middle of the day off today because we finished the load-in early, so here I am to nit-pick as always.
@Stu: I’m good at Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit too!
“Suck it Trebek!” -”Sean Connery”
@Alexandra: My jealousy knows no bounds now that I know you have an iPhone. <3
And while I’m here, here’s an off-topic link with an off-topic reason. Went to City Hall with the aforementioned Mr. Alexandra yesterday; it’s so much fun to see all the people in pretty dresses getting married! There was a woman in a hanbok and a whole party in saris, but most people were just in spring dresses. I had finally worked up the courage to ask a patiently waiting “maid of honor” where she got her absolutely amazing dress, when her couple’s number came up and they all whisked away in a flurry of spring fabrics.
With that in mind, I thought people would like this Improv Everywhere video from last week — they chose a City Hall wedding couple and threw them an impromptu wedding reception right there, with music and gifts and cake: http://improveverywhere.com/2009/06/02/surprise-wedding-reception/ If your computer is slow you can watch it in regular (not HD) or even just look at the pictures.
Oh and Rae I LOVE the iPhone. I am honestly not a “phone” person, and I’m serious when I say that just before I got the iPhone I was on a never-ending quest to find a convenient (ie not for blind old people) but basic no-frills phone that just makes calls. But circumstances worked out so that I got the iPhone at a steep, steep discount, and it is so amazing how great it is.
My problem with gadgety phones has always been that the gadgets get in the way of the phone. On my previous phone, I was always accidentally turning the speaker on or pressing some voice-command button; I never figured out how. And I mean who uses those features all that often anyway? But with the iPhone, the extra features are so helpful, and yet they stay out of the way when I don’t want them. Love.
RE: Patton
Everytime I see that name I always think George C. Scott and then I think of “The Rescuers: Down Under” where GCS plays an evil poacher who always screams “JOANNA!” at his lizard.
Yessssssssss.
JEALOUS ALEXANDRA. INFINITELY JEALOUS. :-p
Val-
I can’t get a bird feeder because we have a mouse issue.
George C Scott is one of my favorites; IMO his role in Dr. Strangelove was genius. He is possibly the best part of that movie.
@PiP: I second that comment. I just love that end scene with Slim Pickins…lulz.
“Yeeeeeeeee–haaaaaaaaaaaaw!”
I love Scott’s facial expressions. And how the more nervous he gets the more gum he shoves in his mouth.
ACK!!!!! I’M SORRY!!!
I’ll get that corrected…….. I’m such a dweeb!
Love the new layout for the mobile Stu. I access from my Samsung Eternity, and I can submit comments from my phone again with the captcha, woo!
I really don’t want to be a downer guys, but I just found out that my godmother was in an accident and she is brain-dead. They are planning to take her off of life support tomorrow.
They are such a wonderful family. They lost a daughter (and we lost a godsister) when she was hit by a drunk driver. They never lost their Cahtolic faith.
Now this happens, and her husband won’t know about it until tomorrow because he went on a camping trip to Canada this week.
Anyway, keep them in your prayers. I just can’t believe this is happening.
PIP,
my prayers are with your Godmother and family. My mother in law passed away on friday..
Jasper and PIP, I’m sorry for both of your losses.
Jasper and PIP,
Both of your families are in my prayers.
*****
Rosie,
Let me know if you solve your problem!
A few ideas on stopping birds from flying into your windows – the birds are seeing the reflection of themselves and their surroundings, so covering parts of the glass with decals can help. Also try keeping the the curtains closed at the time of day that they seem to be running into the window – it will look like a solid wall and they should know better than to fly into it. When it happens seems to depend on the angle of the sun hitting the window, so hopefully it won’t be happening year ’round. If none of that helps, don’t wash your windows so often.
PIP and Jasper –
I am so sorry! Both of you and the families are in my prayers.
Pip and Jasper,
Please accept my condolences for your loss.
Thanks Janet, i’m going to look for decals. I’ll let you know.
All, thank you
